Gasharu Coffee is a family-run, farmer-owned coffee company established in Rwanda in 1973. Its founder, Celestin Rumenerangabo, was raised by his mother, who was displaced in 1959, and at the age of 14, he walked for three days to reach the capital city of Kigali. After working as a live-in domestic worker for three years, he used his savings to purchase land and, at the age of 17, planted 380 coffee trees to start his first farm. Beginning with small-scale local trading, he eventually became the largest supplier of parchment coffee in the region. In 2006, he established the Birembo Coffee Washing Station, and in 2014, relaunched the business under the name Gasharu Coffee. Today, his sons Chris and Valentin are also involved in the management. The company employs 30–40 people on its farms and 240–300 at its washing stations. Its operations are based on the shores of Lake Kivu, near Nyungwe National Park, an area with ideal elevation, soil, and climate conditions for producing high-quality specialty coffee.Read More
