Located in the highlands of Ermera, East Timor, the Fatubessi Estate is a historic coffee farm spanning approximately 3,000 hectares. In 1927, the Timor Hybrid—a natural cross between Arabica and Robusta—was discovered here. With its strong resistance to coffee leaf rust, this variety played a crucial role in saving Arabica crops worldwide, which were suffering from severe outbreaks at the time, and later contributed significantly to the development of disease-resistant cultivars. Today, the estate is managed by Timor Global, which is working to revive specialty coffee production through sustainable practices that make the most of the natural environment.
