This washing station is located in Kirinyaga County at the very edge of the Mt. Kenya forest, at an impressive altitude of 1,610 meters above sea level. It is owned by small-scale farmers and is part of the large Kabare Cooperative Society. All the coffee is fully washed in strict adherence to a defined processing protocol, where ripe cherries are selectively handpicked, delivered to the factory for processing, and fermented. The predominant coffee varieties grown in this region are SL28, SL34, and Batian. The farmers also cultivate tea in this region. The factory has eight permanent staff members and employs 20 to 30 casual workers drawn from the local farmers during the peak season.
