The name Mukuyuni is of the nearby town and the river that runs through it. In the language of the Kamba tribe it means ‘under the fig tree’ because that is where local meetings were held prior to the formation of the town.The Mukuyuni Farmer’s Cooperative was formed 25 years ago by a group of farmers who spilt off from a larger factory. There are a total of 932 members, 347 of whom are women. Within the management board they maintain at least half women representatives. Farmers in this area have intentionally diversified from coffee, looking after also flowers, figs, honey, cattle and chicken.
