This lot is from the 398 women producers of the Kapkiyai Cooperative, who make up just over a quarter of the total cooperative membership. The group is led by Dorcas Jeptanui who also presides over the cooperative’s management board. In 2018 they launched the first Faitrade women only coffee from their region.Previously all members of were male despite women playing a large role in the harvesting, sorting and processing. After an investment from Techno Serve’s Coffee Initiative in 2010, the group began receiving technical training and began placing more emphasis on gender equality. With the inclusion of women members and the coffee they contributed, the cooperative was able to by an eco-pulper, which Chairman Saina says would not have been possible without their contribution. Moreover, a number of husbands gave their wives a segment of their own trees.
