In Uchimachi, the Gonzalo family has been producing coffee from their grandparents\u2019 generation. We had the opportunity to talk to the Gonzalo Brothers, third generation producers who are running the 5 hectares coffee farm.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<section>\n<div class=\"inner\">\n<div class=\"columns\">\n    <div class=\"col\">\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/typica.jp\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Gonzalo_03-1200x801.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5486\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<\/div><div class=\"col\">\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe biggest challenge we faced was the unexpected Coffee Leaf Rust fungus that resulted in crop loss for 10 years. During that time, we found alternative jobs to keep food on the table for the family. As brothers, we went to the city to fix cars.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite these difficulties however, they never considered quitting coffee production.<br><br>\u201cWhen you have a large farm, it&#8217;s not easy to do other work to begin with, but we never thought of coffee production as something tying us down or something we felt tired of. We grew up watching our parents grow coffee, so it only felt natural that we follow in their footsteps.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><section>\n<div class=\"inner\">\n<div class=\"columns\">\n    <div class=\"col\">\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/typica.jp\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Gonzalo_04-960x1200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5487\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<\/div><div class=\"col\">\n\n\n<p>Sometimes the grass can be greener on the other side. Did it ever cross your mind to pursue other work or other places?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBolivia is a landlocked country, so having never seen the ocean, I travelled to see the Pacific Ocean. But visiting the ocean was strictly for fun. I\u2019ve never felt the need to \u2018get away from reality\u2019 or \u2018to escape from my world\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mostly above all, this work is exciting and I constantly feel motivated to try new things. Coffee production is similar to playing sports, it requires constant care and when the growth is good, you feel good. On the other hand, when the growth isn\u2019t good, you feel unsatisfied. That\u2019s why for my own happiness, I always try to keep my coffee trees healthy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re on this farm and you come home tired, you can have snacks from the trees or go for a swim in the river. When you feel stress building up, you can play futsal with your workmates to blow off steam. Regardless of any situation, it&#8217;s important to stay happy. \u201c<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"full\">\n<div class=\"inner\">\n    <figure>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazy_load\" width=\"100%\" height=\"675\" data-origin=\"https:\/\/typica.coffee\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Gonzalo_06.jpeg\" data-width=\"1200\" data-height=\"675\" data-transparent=\"1\" src=\"\/wp-content\/themes\/typica2021\/assets\/images\/common\/spacer.gif\" alt=\"Spacer\" \/>\n    <\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/section><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><section>\n<div class=\"inner\">\n<div class=\"columns\">\n    <div class=\"col\">\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/typica.jp\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Gonzalo_05-1200x801.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5489\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<\/div><div class=\"col\">\n\n\n<p>What are the advantages of working together as brothers?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe biggest advantage is that we\u2019re able to discuss things together to decide on plans and also to decide on roles and support each other. For example, only one of us needs to attend the local assembly, so it&#8217;s great that our farm is never left unattended. Of course there are times when we disagree, but we never fight. \u201c<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><section>\n<div class=\"inner\">\n<div class=\"columns\">\n    <div class=\"col\">\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/typica.jp\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Gonzalo_07-1200x801.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5490\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<\/div><div class=\"col\">\n\n\n<p>We asked the brothers what their next goal was.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe hope to expand our farm and to increase coffee variety and production. We currently have a test trial to create new coffee farms in the Alto Beni municipality, which is about 3 hours away by car. Although we use machinery to remove weeds, much of what we do is by hand, so we\u2019ll slowly mechanize more to increase work efficiency and to improve quality. \u201c<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><section>\n<div class=\"inner\">\n<div class=\"columns\">\n    <div class=\"col\">\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/typica.jp\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Gonzalo_08-1200x801.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5491\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<\/div><div class=\"col\">\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/typica.jp\/narratives\/producers\/nayra-qata\/\">Juan<\/a> has been shedding light on coffee created by smallholders and has been sending them into the world through the dry mill of Nayra Qata. How do you feel about your coffee being delivered to Asia and Europe through Juan?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe never knew where our coffee was being delivered to or had met anyone who had drank our coffee, so this is very exciting and we are both amazed. I like to imagine how someone is drinking our coffee and one day we\u2019d love to try our coffee that\u2019s been roasted deliciously. Maybe what they wish for is no different.
